Zacatepec Community Gifted January 2022

Due south of Mexico City lies a small community that was ravaged by the 2017 Puebla earthquake. Together with our partners Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty and New Story Charity – we’re providing homes to families that lost everything.

On the 33rd anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, a 7.1 magnitude quake shook the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and the Greater Mexico City area. This 20 second-long disaster caused catastrophic damage to the greater Mexico City area and impact over 800 homes. Nearly half of these homes were completely destroyed by the quake. Amidst the widespread rubble stood Zacatepec, a community in Morelos about 80 miles south of Mexico City. Nearly 40,000 people call Zacatepec de Hidalgo home.

The main industry in the town and the surrounding countryside is ranching and cultivation of sugar cane. Located in the dead center of the town is the sugar mill that operates as the main industry in this community. Many of Zacatepec’s residents were impacted by the Puebla earthquake that drove many families into a sudden start of homelessness. This situation inspired World Housing Ambassadors Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty to get involved.
