Ahuachapán is a municipality located on the Western Side of El Salvador, 60 miles away from El Salvador’s capital — San Salvador. Home to 130,00 people this community is plagued by disproportionately large amounts of poverty. 95% of the families here live below the international poverty line of $2.50 USD per day. Families live in extreme poverty, defined by the lack of multiple basic human needs — such as clean water, adequate shelter and nutritious food. Living in survival mode further perpetuates the cycle of poverty and greatly diminishes hope for the next generation to improve their quality of life.

World Housing is working to create brighter futures for the residents of Ahuachapán, El Salvador. Through the amazing generosity and commitment from our funding partners, S&P Real Estate, NexGen Giving Group and Michelle Yu Real Estate, we have completed building 42 new homes in the community, and gifted them to families in 2019.

Ahuachapán, El Salvador

In August 2019, families moved into the community of Ahuachapán in El Salvador. As every family stepped through the front door of their new home, they also stepped into new beginnings and possibilities. One family turned this step into a flourishing foundation for their home and the entire community—the Martinez Contreras family. With a stable home providing their family with the safety of a home and the additional space, Veronica and her family quickly made the most of their new home by starting a bakery. As the first family-run business to come out of Ahuachapán, they have shown us the multiplying factor of stability by uniting their entire community through their hard work.

World Housing’s trusted building partner New Story Charity has developed a deep and productive relationship with the mayor and local government. Through our joint efforts, homes have been built and gifted to families, and the local government has provided electricity, paved roads and clean water for the community.
