Tulum, the new jewel of the Riviera Maya, is the municipality where poverty has increased the most in recent years in the country, according to the most recent data from Mexico’s National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL). The rate went from 32% in 2015 to 62% in 2020. The increase is linked to high rates of migration from poorer states. As a result of the tourism boom, people from Veracruz, Tabasco and Chiapas, among others, have been coming to Tulum in growing numbers to find work. According to the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI), the state of Quintana Roo, where Tulum is located, has a population growth rate of 3.5%, the highest in the country.
World Housing sees the opportunity to work with local organizations and developers in the area of Tulum and Bacalar to start providing homes for the families who are currently living in the area and ones that are migrating to work in this growing area of tourism.
It is important to the developers of real estate in the area to build a safe community for the families who live and work there, while also creating a valuable connection to the people who visit the area. This is a critical way that communities must approach growth to overcome the issues of slum housing. World Housing is currently in pre-development phases of collaborating on the construction of a holistic community in phases of 30 to 50 homes for each phase, targeting a total of approximately 250 – 400 homes.
Each neighbourhood of the community will be planned to fit the cultural needs of the families and fitting our pillars of sustainable communities: homes as the foundation, access to safe water and services, health and education for the children.
